The Thing Poster by markwelser The Thing Poster by markwelser
Here's a recent poster I made for John Carpenter's THE THING. I just love this movie to death. Seems like a lot of other folks do, too. I've seen a bunch of fan-made posters for this movie so I had to try to be a bit more creative so I wasn't just redoing what others have already done. I may or may not have succeeded there.

Its now considered a classic as it should be!  The effects hold up even today in this CGI laden cinema times,  One of the best remakes ever done and a triumph for John Carpenter!  Most Exxxxcellent poster! (would be great even for the original 1950's version!) ;)

This is awesome, I recently set up a website called 'Poster Spy' which is a social network/portfolio solution for poster artists and I'd love it if you could share your work with the other artists.

I love this movie. It's also a shame so few people forget that it was based off a short novella/short story by John Campbell. Fantastic, and actually more horrifying than the movie was.

Man is the warmest place to hide. Shocking that this film was a failure when it came out, it's one of the best horror films I've seen.

What I said was an understatement. The
'veiny" shillouette made in this poster matches the concept of the alien all to well. Plus it alone makes it even more interesting to say "Man is the wormest place to hide."

Oh--here's a direct link.

Many of the artistic re-imaginings of "The Thing" focus on either MacReady or the blood test scene. Yours, however, is squarely focused on the film's catalyst: a malevolent being among us in the guise of the benign and familiar. I don't know whether you intended to pay homage to the original Thing poster--Drew Struzan's "Glowface"--but you did a remarkable job of capturing its essence while weaving in your own artistry. Very well done!

Thanks a lot! I always try to do something different than what is already out there (trust me--I do a lot of research of other posters before I sit down to do mine so I know what not to do). If I'm just redoing someone else's design, what's the point? I also try to avoid picking a scene from the movie and drawing it (though, I have done that a few times because I'm occasionally lazy). My main focus is to try and get the movie down to it's most basic elements and show it with one image. This was the case here. It was tricky because, like you said, the original poster is the glowface guy and this is just another shot of the alien taking on a human form, but when the film is about a creature that can look like you or me and you don't know what's inside--it was tough to get away from. My compromise was to at least shift the figure off to the side rather than centering it like on the original poster. Glad you dig it!

Your work paid off handsomely and you really nailed the ominous atmosphere of The Thing. I especially like the iconic profile of the Outpost 31 camp, and the chopper is a nice touch, too. Everything is just right!

Will you make this print available in a larger size than 11x17?

Thanks! I do offer all my designs in either 18x24 or 24x36 on my etsy shop. Those are all made to order so I have listings for the sizes and folks just tell me which designs they want.

I love this, you did a great job creating dramatic tension with this poster. I really like how your creature could be any of the guys in the movie.

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted the figure to be vague enough that it wouldn't ruin any surprises in the film for folks who haven't seen it yet (whoever they are).
