The Shining poster by markwelser The Shining poster by markwelser
This is another big favorite of mine.

Not much to say really, except that I when I buy a house--I want that carpet design.

UPDATE: Changed around a few fonts and lost some studio logos.

If you're interested in buying this as a print, please go here:

Mark, I was hoping for "The Shining" you'd do a profile of a VW bug driving through a mountain range.

Just kidding. This design is brilliant! That hexagonal carpet pattern is so striking in the film that it's a perfect element to incorporate in your poster. Great, great work in making a poster that really resonates and brings back the same feeling of horror that permeates the film!

So glad you dig it. I need to go back to doing simple designs like this one. Lately, I've been overthinking them and they've become a bit too busy. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I like how you used one of the main things from the film, The Axe, here! :D and the pattern works great on this one!

Thanks so much! This one really strikes a chord with folks. Must be that looming axe that does it for folks.

Thanks! Most of the hard work here is done by the pattern--I just slapped an axe on it.

Another great one. The pattern is perfect, reminds me of the vintage-creepy look of the mansion. Also like the typo treatment!

Whew! In that case, I certainly appreciate it! I've never been comfortable doing typography so it's nice to know I can pull it off sometimes!

The colours of that infamous pattern are not correct, but other than that, it's nice. :)

Yeah--I try just stick to 3 colors for these. Orange, brown and white this time. Adding red to the pattern would make it more accurate, sure, but I didn't think it was necessary for the design to work so I dropped it.

Thanks! That's what I'm going for: simple, but not esoteric. I try to avoid the "Fight Club Soap" situation. I love the movie and I thought the posters were brilliant, but it's done to death anymore. Seems a lot of folks making these phony posters gravitate towards that one element of the film, center it and call it a day. That usually only works for folks who have already seen the movie and "get it". I'm trying to pretend to interest people who haven't seen these. That's what movie posters should do, afterall--get people to want to watch the movie.

Wow.

Sorry for the tirade! Heh.

Its no problem lol. The only thing with the soap is, the soap is fight club, the whole film can be summed up in the line "We sell fat rich women's asses back to them!" Overused yea, but there isn't really another emblem for that movie like the soap. Your design is quite effective though, the everyone knows what that object is even if they haven't seen the shining. and the diagonal that it's on denotes movement (and killing) since it is coupled with the text "a modern horror masterpiece"

Thanks! I agree. For Fight Club, the soap works. I don't want to sound like a grump, but there are tons of those minimalist movie posters out there that seem to miss the point. As an example that I've just made up as not to pick on anyone--a Zombieland poster featuring just a Twinkie. That movie isn't about Twinkies. Sure, one of the characters in the movie is looking for them, but that image alone is not going to entice anyone into wanting to seek that movie out. If anything, it's just an in-joke with others who have seen the movie. I suppose you could make the argument that these AREN'T supposed to work like real posters and they're just for fun. That's totally fine. There really aren't any rules for making your own posters and putting them up on DeviantArt, I suppose. And let's face it--I'm NOT an expert by any means. I barely know what I'm doing so I guess more than anything, I'm just stating my preference.

I want this carpet, too-in fact, I'd love to have carpet in my apartment, period!

Love the poster, but where's the WB logo?;)

Ha! You wish for carpets--I just want doors. Our apartment is an open loft. While it's pretty cool, it's essentially one big room. It can make getting away to do work pretty difficult. Oh well.

Thanks! The original version had the WB logo, but I got rid of it. Darn.

Very, very nice! What software did you use? I'd love to know how to do the poster creases. Favourited.

These are all done in photoshop. I use photos of creases and set the layer to "multiply". If there's a lot of black in the design, I'll duplicate the later, invert it and set it to "screen" so the folds show up over the black sections.

It's all pretty simple. If I can do it, anyone can.

i would puke on this carpet. but if you ever do get this carpet i'm gonna come over with my big wheel and ride around.

so what instilled the idea for all of these neato posters.

There's a Horror Fest every year in my town and I decided to get a table this year and sell stuff. I realized I didn't have much horror stuff so I started to put these together because they'd be pretty quick. It's also given me a chance to stretch my design muscles which are horribly out of shape.
