The Dark Crystal poster by markwelser The Dark Crystal poster by markwelser
Finally free to do some of these posters without relying on a horror theme. Decided to play around with one of my favorite movies when I was a kid--The Dark Crystal. My first poster in this series, Re-Animator, was pretty simple and some of my later designs got a bit more complicated. I wanted to get back to that initial simplicity here.

Not sure how I feel about those cracks. I may revisit this later.

Awesome! I love this, really original. You should check out Strongstuff on Deviant as well. He does a lot of movie poster art like this. I'll definitely check out maybe buying this as a print.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, Tom Whalen (strongstuff) is about a thousand times better at this than I am. He clearly knows what he's doing--I'm just farting around figuring stuff out as I go. Glad you're digging it, though!

Thanks a lot! When I was a kid, I watched the VHS so much and bothered everyone in the house with it that my older brother destroyed the tape with a giant magnet, making it completely unwatchable. Boo!

Thanks! Your English is just fine. I scan in folded paper and layer it in with Photoshop, setting the layer property to "multiply". It's that easy!

Yeah, the horror stuff is fine, but I think everyone's ready for a break by now.

As for the contest--I'm not sure. If I get time to enter a piece, it'll probably be He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword.

Kind of figured... He-man... or She Ra bc of your icon.. that's why I chose something.. else.. I'm a He man... fan... watch them probably once a week.. on my DVD sets... but.... I hope you do enter them.. You have a unique style... and are great at poster making.. Hope to see it when and if you have time.. I understand though. Take care Mark...

Yeah, I'm a He-Man nut! My wife probably wishes I wasn't--then maybe we'd have more room around the house for something other than toys.

I love making these posters, but a lot of my time is spent doing illustrations. I've recently been hit up with a lot more work in that department. I'm not complaining. It sure beats answering phones for 6 years (which is what I used to do to pay the bills).

Even if I don't get a chance to enter the contest, I still would like to get to something He-Man related in this style eventually.

Sounds cool.. The He-man and posters part... lol... I collect Horror action figures..and used to shoot the heads off of my GI Joes... (kind of dumb, right?) Oh, the life of being a kid... physically.. lol not mentally ... Which I suppose you and I are young at heart... and answering phones.. Blah... I can't stand the phone.. good for you!

also... The cracks are fine.. take another glance at the character walking up the crack.. I thought the Dark Crystal was this "puppet like" .. . the character reminds me of brave heart with a cape on right now!...

um.. reference for the crystal if you're not happy![link]

and then for the lead character...? I have no clue..

but the crystal was pink... It would be interesting to see the poster pink..

just stupid suggestions and some kind of opinion I guess... that might help your creativity out ... just saying.. I love your posters... the way they are..

take care

Hmm--I guess I thought I remembered Gen wearing some kind of short cape when he was traveling. Maybe he didn't. Oh well.

These are just meant to be representations of the films, only. I try not to get too specific with details and often pretend as though I hadn't seen the movie and only have a basic outline of the story to work with. It helps to keep things pretty basic and this is why all my figures are silhouettes(I did give him little Gelfling ears, but it's probably too small to see). True, the crystal was more purple in the film but I felt the design might work better with the colors reversed like this.

I appreciate the feedback! Thanks!

Yeah... I wasn't trying to be too critical just a daily viewpoint of a fan of the show, who loves your work so... Keep it up Mark... Really cool stuff and I wouldn't waste my time on a comment if I just didn't wish the best for that person... Cheers good buddy! keep up the great posters! They really are one of the top styled ones on D Art!

Hey, no worries! I welcome any criticism, good or bad. I figure if someone brings something up that I can't justify--then I'm wrong and they're right. I'm not ashamed to admit it. A lot of folks here on DA have helped me to improve my posters from design elements to typography. If I can make something look better, I most certainly will. If my reply came off as snooty, I apologize. It wasn't my intent. Maybe it's my own fault for refusing to use emoticons when I write. Please don't stop giving feedback. It won't hurt my feelings even if it's super-negative. It'll only make me want to improve more than I already do.

No.. I didn't take it negative at all.. I had a run in not too long ago, where someone went off on my water bottle design.. and screen shot it and ripped it apart.... I mean they went out and made a new username and screenshot it.. and basically said a bunch of stuff that was just breaking me down.. So, I told myself from now on.. Take it all positive.. and just ignore the negative people... That's what I meant by I took the time out to critique your work.. bc I do enjoy it... and I will only critique pieces which can either make someone inspirational for other ideas... and etc.., I bet your a pretty cool person and lived an up and down and all around kind of life.. But I can relate... as long as your happy and see what good about life... and makes you happy, right? btw.. I really did like the Pee Wee poster...! lol it was great.. cool .. ttyl..

When I was a child, I watched this movie a lot. Possibly too much? It was to the point where my older brothers were just plain sick of hearing it being played all the time so they ran a very strong magnet over my VHS tape, completely erasing it. I was so sad...but now I have the DVD! Yay!
